Meet the Artist - Larry Otoo

The Foundation for Contemporary Art, Ghana invites you to MEET THE
ARTIST - LARRY OTOO

Larry Otoo is a Ghanaian artist, born in 1956 and presently working
and living in Accra. He graduated form the College of Art at the
University of Science and Technology in Kumasi in 1981. Additionally
he has a Master’s degree in African Art and Comparative Literature
from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Larry is “one of the most successful artists in Ghana, with
exhibitions in Europe, Canada and the United States.” His style has
been described as encompassing realism, expressionism and abstraction.
However he himself seems to have a bias towards the latter, he
believes “there will be a shift from realistic painting to more
abstract painting. Abstract is a form that permeates every society. It
is universal.”

The content of his work is primarily inspired by Ghanaian day to day
activities. He has described how “Each time I pick up the brush to
paint, I have a strong feeling that an obligation has been placed on
me to record and preserve our tradition visually.” He gathers
inspiration from the positive images of everyday life “music, the
market, the seamstress’s place” and considers himself to be a social,
rather than political commentator. However he does not simply paint
the ‘traditional’ images around him but rather more “contemporary
things, like fashion shows….and sports, like billiards, football or
golf.” Additionally Jazz music, which he was exposed to as a child,
seems to have inspired and influence Larry Otoo significantly. “The
music is almost tangible in the abstract rhythm with which he paints
his musicians.”

I have been thinking about doing a Christmas drive this Christmas (for the past hour) (we've got Antoine to thank for this ^_^). And seeing as a Christmas drive would involve everyone being driven I thought I'd ask you, our blog readers, what you thought of the idea.

The I ♥ Accra Christmas drive. On Christmas day we all show Accra how much we care and make someone else's Christmas special. We won't be asking for any cash donations but we will be asking for people to contribute food, drinks and their time. I know Christmas is supposed to be a time for families but there are people in our beloved city that have no families or no one that cares about them enough to make their day memorable so why don't we sacrifice as we were sacrificed for and dedicate our Christmas to someone else this year?

Let me know what you think of the idea.

On the road from 30^th April to 7^th of May 2009

Brought To You By the French Embassy and Vodafone

Organized by the Cultural Affairs Services of the French Embassy in partnership with Vodafone, the Cultural Caravan is an initiative designed to challenge artists to develop entertainment by creating new ideas and material which will help the local industry grow. The Culture Caravan is a musical in a contemporary context, with a DJ, a band, traditional musicians, dancers, artists and actors taking you through local fables, daily drama, current news and issues in a format that bears some resemblance to Concert Parties. Starring Hiplife Grandpapa Reggie Rockstone, Kwaw Kese, King Ayisoba, Wanlov the Kubolor, DJ Black, Master Drummer Okyerema Yaw Kontor and his all female drummers and theatre starlet Abena Takyi amongst others.

Arnaud Dornon, Head of Cooperation and Cultural Affairs at the French Embassy spent months developing the concept with Pidgen Music, and enlisted the help of renowned Director Michel Crespin (nicknamed the “Pope of Street Art” in France) to assist with the project. Speaking about the collaboration, he said “the French Government appreciates how important our culture is to our development and economy, and I am very excited by this project, which combines the best from France with the best from Ghana.This is also a new era in commercial partnerships and we are very happy to have Vodafone as sponsors of this project.”

Panji Anoff, the Artistic Director, is very upbeat. “People don’t even know that Reggie Rockstone is an actor who went to drama school and performed in many plays in the U.K. before hiplife. We have Reggie, Wanlov the Kubolor, Kwaw Kese, King Ayisoba and Abena and Yaw Kontor acting roles, performing their hit songs and DJ Black scratching video.This will be a real treat for the audience. Ghanaians are always eager for something refreshing and it is time our artists are challenged with real opportunities to show their talent and ability.”

Vodafone’s sponsorship of this Culture Caravan is a first in the industry. As David Anku, Events manager at Vodafone puts it, “At Vodafone we believe in supporting the local arts industry. By associating with this novel concept, we are saying that we are ready to see it make waves and look forward to the reviews that it will garner.”

Ghana Through the Lens: A Photo Journey by Willis Bell

The Gothe-Institut and Mmofra Foundation presents a spectacular photo memoir of the immediate post-Independence years of Ghana. The exhibition provides a glimpse of 100,000 images of Ghana bequeathed to the custody of Mmofa Foundation by long time Ghanaian resident, photographer Willis Eugene Bell (1924-1999).

The archive is in the process of restoration and digitization under the technical direction of Alf Bremer with the support of the Gothe-Institut.

Gregory Miller is a Managing Director of Greenhill & Co., an independent global investment banking firm focused on mergers and acquisitions, financial restructuring and merchant banking. Greenhill & Co. is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (ticker: GHL). At Greenhill, Miller serves clients in the media industry, with a particular focus on companies involved in publishing and information services in both the U.S and Europe. Prior to joining Greenhill in early 2004, he was a Managing Director at Credit Suisse, where he worked for more than 14 years. He has worked with some of the world's largest publishing and information companies and has advised on more than 100 merger and acquisition and capital raising transactions in all segments and media of the industry.

Lyle Ashton Harris Biography

Lyle Ashton Harris was born in the Bronx and raised in New York City and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. He currently lives and works in New York City and Accra, Ghana. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Walker Art Center, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, the Kunsthalle Basel, and the Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva. Harris participated in the 2nd International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville and the 52nd Venice Biennale. His work is in numerous public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Harris’s commissioned work is regularly featured in a wide range of publications, including The New York Times Magazine, Vibe, and New York. During 2000 and 2001, he was a fellow at the American Academy in Rome. He is represented by CRG Gallery in New York. Gregory R. Miller & Co. has recently published a monograph of the artist, Lyle Ashton Harris: Blow Up, with essays by Cassandra Coblentz, Sarah Elizabeth Lewis and Kwame Anthony Appiah. Forthcoming in 2009, Gregory R. A weekend to remember

Last weekend was definitely worth all the work thanks to Mike O & Eugene of Xclusive Vista Entertainment. True to their word they gave us a show like no other. I HEART ACCRA would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on the outstanding success of the show which was superbly pulled off even with all the glitches and problems they faced.

Well done guys more grease to your elbows!

On Saturday night one of the official sponsors for the show Hennessy held a Private Hennessy Party at Embar with the most delicious Hennessy cocktails ever! All I need to say is "Miami by night". All the drinks were on the house by kind courtesy of all the lovely people at Hennessy and EVERYONE had a great time.

The show on Sunday was even more spectacular than I imagined it would be. The local acts Scientific, Praye, 4x4, Asem, Skillions, Peer Pressure and all the others were fantastically well put together and Reggie blew us all away with his suit, words and sounds.

Miss Trinity was just what the guys needed to get them going and there was nothing but smiles from the three lucky guys picked to go on stage.

Omarion... Omarion was wonderful, he danced and he sang and the crowd went wild over and over and over again as he gave us all a no holds barred performance. Ghana would like to show her appreciation to him for coming through on such short notice. He was pretty impressed with how Ghana held it down on the dance floor too (see pics for more details on that).

Fat Joe gave an un-miss-able performance and played a few tricks on us all along the way. He sincerely apologized for being unable to make it the day before due to ill health and disassociated himself and Xclusive Vista from the disappointment caused by Sean Kingstons failure to attend. He went on to congratulate the boys on their work and guarantee Accra that this was only the beginning and there would be only bigger and better shows from XVE.

I HEART ACCRA is proud to have been associated with The State of the Republic concert and would like to once again congratulate Mike & Eugene on a job well done.

The Week Ahead

This is proving to be a very busy period for the I HEART ACCRA team. Kobs is fully immersed in the literature of Pan-Africanism which is now in second gear over in Kokrobite. The newest member of our team Felicia is busy getting ready for our Christmas activities and I am learning the art of putting Afro-chiq into recycling over at the Kokrobite institute, whilst setting my my mind on WAPi and preparing to Party it up with our guests from way yonder this weekend.

I'm really impressed with Accra. I still remember what it was like here 4 short years ago when all people ever talked about was how bored they were and how there was nothing to do. These days it's hard to take a breather from the amount of things that there are to do.

The Pan-African Literary Festival (PALF)

Our beloved city is about to be the centre of a paper storm of readings, workshops & discussions: the Pan-African Literary Forum (PALF) is finally upon us! Featured writers, publishers and poets will include Tsitsi Dangarembga, Binyavanga Wainaina, Kadija Sesay, Dr. Abena Busia, Kofi Awoonor, Mohammed Ben Abdullah & many, many more participating in a host of readings, panel discussions, and other events across Accra and Kokrobitey.

The conference schedule is up on the PALF website. Please note that events and venues are still very much subject to change so make sure to regularly check for updates.

Space at most venues will be limited, but the organizers hope to pack in as many people as possible. Most events are free of charge, but the workshops will require pre-registration at the orientation session at the NYU Center (in Labone, near Ashesi University) this Friday at 7pm.

The Forum is a rare opportunity to engage with literature, especially from the Diaspora: something somewhat rare in Accra. So don't miss out!

Bringing together established and emerging writers of the Diaspora for a series of writing workshops, craft seminars, lectures, professional development, networking and cultural activities, the inaugural Pan African Literary Forum (PALF) goes down in Accra and Kokrobitey between July 3rd and 18th.

IHeartAccra has had a word with the organizers, who inform us that participation is free for Ghanaian writers and there may be events (e.g. book readings) open to the Ghanaian public.
